The Philippine Army has promoted world-renowned boxing champion Manny Pacquiao to the rank of full Colonel. This followed after he was first enlisted in the army’s reserve force in April 2006.
In September 2011, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III accepted his commissionship to become a lieutenant colonel after being recommended by the army officials.
Now, in a report by GMA News Online, Manny has announced via his Instagram account (with the handle of mannypacquiao) that he has been promoted to the rank of a full Colonel.
He shared the post on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017. According to him, he is extremely honored to be part of the Command and General Staff Course Class 62.
Jinkee, his wife, also expressed her delight on the mentioned social media platform.
The source cited that in April 2006, Manny Pacquiao was enlisted in the reserve force with recommendations from Brig. Gen. Alexander Yano.
Six months after his enlistment, the boxing champ was promoted to the rank of technical sergeant. In October 2007, he gained the rank of Master Sergeant and was soon elevated to Senior Master Sergeant in May 2009.
Initially, army officials admitted that they had reservations upon promoting Manny to officer’s rank since it usually requires one to have a college degree.
However, the boxer held an honorary doctorate degree in humanities that was granted to him by the Southwestern University in February 2009. This enabled him to gain the promotion in the army.
In a separate report from the same source, Manny was quoted as saying during his promotion of being a lieutenant colonel:
“Obviously, I am not trained for military operations, but it should be emphasized that reservists, are by their truest nature, civilian professionals first and military personnel second… Congressman Pacquiao is fairly entitled with the rank of lieutenant colonel…”
Now, he is happily serving the Philippine Army as a full-fledged Colonel.
Congratulations, Manny Pacquiao!
