President Rodrigo Duterte insisted that the deployment ban of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) to Kuwait will be sustained and opened the possibility of expanding it to other countries with reported cases of maltreatment of employees from the Philippines. “The ban will continue, and it will extend to other countries. Hindi ko style ‘yan,” Duterte said in a speech before Filipino-Chinese businessmen at the Manila Hotel on Monday, GMA News reported. Duterte once again underscored his demand to Kuwait and other Arab countries to treat their Filipino employees with dignity and respect. “I repeat, the Filipino is a slave of nobody. The Fi

Some GCC Countries Could Double VAT to 10%: Report

The report, however, didn't say by when the GCC governments could hike the tax rate. Some GCC countries could double VAT rate to 10 per cent mainly due to discrepancy between five per cent statutory and effective tax rate, says a new study released on Sunday. "We project that the regional VAT rollout would push up government revenues on average by about 1.7-2 per cent of GDP, based on a collection-efficiency ratio of 50-60 per cent. A ratio in this range would reflect an effective tax rate of 2.5-3 per cent, lower than the 5 per cent statutory rate, owing to expected administrative inefficiencies and the ability countries have to exempt and zero-rate selected sectors," international ratings agency S&P said in a note on Sunday. Trevor Cullinan, an analyst with S&P in Dubai,...

List of Countries That Offer Visa-Free Access to Filipinos

To Filipinos traveling overseas, getting a visa can be a time-consuming, if not resource-draining exercise. Consulates and embassies often require plenty of documentation to justify them granting visas: financial statements and proof of employment are among them. And that’s if the destination country has its consular presence in the Philippines. Given such challenges faced by a legitimate tourist, another alternative is to visit countries that don’t require Philippine passport holders to apply for visas.
